The St. Helena appellation covers 9,000 acres along the flat narrow land towards the northern end of the Napa Valley between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. The western hills provide greater protection from maritime weather influence, so this growing area enjoys warmer temperatures. The narrowing of the valley floor provides more heat reflection off the hillsides, as well as less fog and wind. Mid-summer temperatures in the Swig vineyard often peak in the mid to high 90°F range. The “up-valley” climate of St. Helena, and the volcanic soil and ample hillside drainage of the Swig vineyard, present ideal conditions for producing concentrated yet refined Merlot fruit.

2013 brought us a warm dry spring, which in turn produced anearly bud break. This phenomenon helped with canopy vigor and berrysize, creating ideal conditions for flowering. 2013 will be remembered asa truly outstanding vintage, with structured tannins. In addition, this harvest yielded nearly double the tonnage compared to the last few vintages in these vineyards, with a very favorable balance of acidity and fruit.

Wine Description

2013 was a great year for Bordeaux varietals grown in Napa. After de-stemming and crushing, we fermented these Merlot grapes in stainless steel tanks for just shy of three weeks. The wine spent 23 months in a mix of new and neutral oak. This Merlot, which has the body and structure ofa Cabernet, is rich with flavors of black cherry, plum, chocolate, and herbs.

Food Pairing

Beef with red wine, fish with red wine, does it matter? It’s not the proteinchoice that determines the wine,it is the sauce and seasoning that onepairs with it.For example, salads that contain red berry fruits, or foodsthat have a bit of hot spice, or even the anise flavor of five spice andfennel all pair beautifully with this Merlot.
