Several Napa Valley vineyards contributed to this blend. The Cabernet Franc comes from Pope Valley, nestled in the northeastern hillsides above the valley. Here, cooler days and evenings that are slightly warmer than the valley floor produce deeply structured fruit-forward grapes. Our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a vineyard east of the Silverado Trail that produces tannic wines with a long life expectancy. The Swig Vineyard in Saint Helena provides the dark rich fruit of the Merlot.
2012 brought Napa Valley another incredible vintage. The perfectly timed bud break in the spring led to steady flowering and even fruit set. The long hot days of summer followed by cool evenings were essential to the success of this wine.
Each varietal was fermented and aged separately before tasting and work on the blend began. New and used French Oak barrels provided the right amount of balance to the finished blend. As per Art’s direction, the wines were made to reflect the place and varietal with the final wine being better than it’s individual components.
Opening with dark ripe current fruit followed by a slight hint of Bell Pepper and Mint, our 2012 Meritage coats the palate with divine fruit and follows through with a long finish. The Tannins are firm and give body and structure but do not overpower the fruit.
Try it with Italian pot roast, for a hearty, filling and easy pairing. Start with boneless chuck roast, black pepper, salt, thyme, Italian flat leaf parsley, and add your favorite vegetables, broth and a generous cup of our Meritage. Cook slowly, allowing the spices in the meal to bring out the fruit in the wine.
