Petit Verdot 2014

This wine has immediate appeal to all the senses. The dark, inky color alludes to the intense aromatics on the nose, including blackberry, cherry compote, and notes of cedar and spice. A dense, rich palate is followed by medium-grain tannins and a lasting, spicy finish.

Vintage
Napa’s 2014 harvest was unusually early, but despite the ongoing drought, yields were only slightly lower than normal. The majority of northern California’s rain for the year came in late February and early March, with very little precipitation in subsequent months. This early rain gave the grapes much needed water at the perfect time of the year. The end result of the dry, hot 2014 growing season was a harvest that arrived weeks earlier than the 2013 harvest. Because of this phenomenon, 2014 yielded clusters with smaller than usual berries and intense concentrated flavors.

Vineyard
The Oro Puro Vineyard, nestled on the southern end of the Silverado Trail, is influenced by slightly cooler temperatures than the surrounding area due to its creekside location. The vineyard, which is adjacent to Judd’s Hill Winery, produces grapes with spice, rich fruit flavors, and great depth and complexity. The carefully-farmed, lowyielding vineyard consistently produces high-quality fruit every vintage. This is our first single-varietal, single-vineyard Petit Verdot.

Winemaking
We considered ourselves privileged to have been able to purchase 1 ton of Petit Verdot from the Oro Puro vineyard. Harvested by hand and fermented in open-top containers, the wine was then aged for almost two years in a mix of new and neutral French oak barrels. Since Petit Verdot is rarely bottled as a single varietal, this wine is truly special.  48 cases produced.

Food Pairing
Due to the rigid tannin structure and concentrated nature of this wine, foods with plenty of weight, protein, and fat are your best bets. Consider rich cuts of red meat, well-aged cheese, like Stilton, or wild game. Barbecue ribs, beef stew, roasted rack of lamb, and game birds all stand up well to the rich appeal of Petit Verdot.
